Small setback

So as I posted earlier, Adrian was given a one day setback. He lost a small amount of weight and the rounding doctor he saw today put him on a 26 calorie protein formula that the nurses have added to his bottles. He's doing ok with it.
It smells terrible, has made him spitty and burping lots. For me he seemed most comfortable up on my shoulder. So hopefully he can show weight gain and come home Wednesday! He gets full easily on this too, but the nurse reassured me that this is normal, too!
He was wide awake for his sisters today! They were excited for that.
Two goofballs.
This boys been a pill these past couple of days. Grumpy, has a cold and taking after his moody sisters! At least he's sleeping at night for me!

Until tomorrow!!

Big steps forward

So when I got to the hospital this morning I noticed Adrian didn't have the big bean pillow around him. Then the nurse came in and asked if I noticed. I said the pillow thing? She said no, his feeding tube! Oh my gosh. I could have done a flip! I was and still am beyond elated! The pure joy and excitement I've felt all day is indescribable. I've not felt anything like it. If a non-pregnant person can glow...I have been!!
Not only are we what feels like inches to the end of our journey, but just days! She said a few days or at least for sure by the end of the week! I seriously hope just a couple days.
If they haven't done it already, he will do his car seat test tomorrow. This is just him in his seat to make sure he doesn't have any spells for a total of 90 minutes.
I can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!!

Until then!

Two weeks

I don't have a ton of updates to give today. Adrian didn't have any spells over night or today!
He's two weeks old. Back up to 5 pounds. We're just continuing to go day by day!
I did take Henry to the doc this morning two very rough nights, his cough, not eating much and ear digging. He's fine though! Just a grump from not sleeping much. Oh well.

Until tomorrow!

Backwards

When in the nicu there is a new language. One we are becoming familiar with now (as of last night) is called a spell. Adrian has had a few. What it means is his heart rate drops and the alarms go off and the nurses rush in.
He had one last night while my mom was holding him. He quit breathing for a few seconds. The nurse said his tongue was stuck at the top of his mouth. Something he has to associate with his breathing process. It's common and happens a lot. Scared my mom to death.
His spells are also a sign that he's working too hard to eat and is tired. So this morning they used his tube to give him a break because of the few he had during the night. If he isn't given the break he can start to drop weight too, which automatically puts him to the tube feeding. Something we've been trying to work away from, but we also don't want him to drop weight!
It makes perfect sense. It doesn't set him back any further with not getting to go home. It's just his way of saying I need a break.
He also had his circumsion tonight as well. I wasn't there, but my mom and Ryan said he did great.
He ate like a champ!
Got lots and lots of snuggles.

Here's to hoping he doesn't have spells tonight!
I realize I haven't posted about Henry lately. He's doing good. Been very cranky since he's still cutting teeth, has a gross cough and not sleeping the best. Hopefully he can pop the teeth out and kick his cough out the door. Other than that he's learned to sing let it go. Literally those three words. It gets pretty noisey here now!

Until tomorrow!

Eating champ

Adrian nursed the best he has yet, today! The first time he did 34/40 and the second was 24/40. Also, with his second feeding he drank the rest of his 20 mls out of the bottle! A total of 44 mls!!
He had another good day!
Got lots of sister time.
I just want him to come home!!

Until tomorrow

Steps forward

Adrian was moved into a regular bed today!! It's one step closer to the end of this very long journey. Now it's just his feedings.
His feedings are slowly getting better each day. It comes down to his stamina and being strong enough to do it all. They're relaxing a little on him. What this means is he gets a bottle that has 40 mls in it. If he doesn't drink all of it (say 5 or a little more is left over), they won't put the rest in his feeding tube. Progress to get that out of his nose!
We know he can do it!
He's still doing awesome!!

Until tomorrow.

Kids

Lately I've been finding myself staring at my kids and thinking "Man she's so beautiful; How did she get so smart; When did he get so big?" The list goes on. I feel like since I was gone from home for a month that I have been looking at my kids differently. I have no idea how to describe it, but I just stare at them and think about how lucky I am. Maybe it's still hormones coming down and new ones building up, but I have a new appreciation for my time with them. Being stuck at Mercy for that long was hard, but I feel like it's made me a better mom now that I'm home.
Today was my first day back on school duty with Iz. We had a rough start, but it was all good when we got going. This afternoon I was vacuuming and she wanted to as well!
She didn't do much, but she did it! Henry and Viola help in their own unique ways as well-but not today.
Adrian is back up to 5 pounds. We found out he needs to do a solid 48 hours of feedings to be able to go. At least that's what our understanding was tonight. Each nurse says something different. Fingers crossed he can do it! He had a great day, though!!

Timeline questions

I keep getting asked when Adrian will be home or how long will he be in the nicu. I have an answer. It's not one anyone likes, but it's I don't know. I really truly don't. I want to say today, tomorrow or this weekend, but I can't. He is doing so well for his "age".  The nurses keep telling us that. It's encouraging. His biggest hurdle is still his eating. He gets better everyday, but he has to be consistent with every single feeding. Hopefully this week he can really kick it in gear!
He was SO awake when we got there. Ryan scooped him right up and he just looked around and around.
He soaked up lots of daddy time today.
He also met his uncle Ian and aunt Charmaine. Also Ryan's aunt Debbie and uncle Greg, but I didn't get a pic.
This morning the kiddos had lots of playtime with Ryan.
And more batman fun.

Until tomorrow!!

Batman

I took the big kiddos to a batman themed birthday party. There was a life size balloon of him! I was only able to get a picture of Viola with him.
There was a small fountain area and the kids ran around that. Had lots of cake and played hard!
Henry made a mess of himself...two times.
Cake and then falling asleep in the van with a sucker in his mouth!
After the party I took the girls to see Adrian at the hospital. They were super excited!
He woke up for them. They were so excited to hold him and kiss him. It will be so much easier when he's home and they can hold him as long as they want!
I wasn't able to stay long...I didn't want to chance driving home in the stormy weather that's coming. Plus I'm kind of sore tonight so I have my feet up!
We all got some good snuggles!!

Until tomorrow!
Adrian's bed is ready (well Ryan has to put the side back on)!

1 week old

This has been the best week; most emotional week; hardest week of my life-but we've also come so far! As of today Adrian is done with phototherapy for his jaundice. His levels went way down over night! He's pooping like a champ, and we're very glad for that!
He rocked nursing again today! He nursed 22 mls out of his 40! The rest he got through his tube. So yes-they upped his feedings again to 40 mls-seems to be the daily pattern. Up 5 more each day!
He had an outfit on when I got there. I changed him into one of ours.
He pooped and while being changed pooped all over this outfit, so he got to wear another one.  I didn't get a pic of that one. But hey-3 outfits on his first day of clothes! Not too shabby!
We're still at 4 lbs 10 oz, which is fine. Positive vibes for him to just eat and eat more!! I really, really want him home!!

Until tomorrow!!

A letter to Adrian

When I was first admitted to the hospital I was given a binder all about the nicu, what to expect and so on. Well there's a part in the back that I can keep track of all the daily changes and things that are happening. There's also a journal spot and today I've felt rather emotional and decided to write a letter to Adrian. I want to share it.
Adrian,
As we are almost to your one week birthday, mommy has had so many emotions this week. I have never felt myself will power someone so much as I have you. I will my body to give you the best through each feeding. We all want you to come home so badly, and my emotions are all over. Some days I'm good, other times I cry because it's incomplete without you. Your sisters don't fully understand, but can't wait to have you home.
You are so perfect in so many ways. You are strong and have so much strength and we all know you're a fighter! So many people are praying for you and love you. You've come so far in a week! We love you sweet boy!
So that's my letter.
I'm happy to say he is 100% iv free! He nursed so well this morning that they adjusted his tube feeding from 30 to 15 mls!! I am so proud of him for that. He is up an oz in weight at 4 11 now! Still tanning under the lights, so today we've decided he's in sunny Hawaii!  Those are the only changes. We still need him to poop more!
Big kiddos had a picnic lunch at the park with Grammy!! And after I got home I did some cleaning and we played outside again.
Adrain drank an entire bottle for Ryan tonight! 1 oz and that's huge!!!!

Until tomorrow!!!
